Prior to his appointment as Chief Strategy Officer, Khan served as Executive Vice President – Operations, Planning & Security, where he oversaw grid operations, including 24/7 bulk electric system operations and support of real-time systems; PJM’s planning function, including resource adequacy planning, generation interconnection planning, interregional planning and transmission planning; and PJM’s security function, including cybersecurity and physical security; as well as business continuity and facilities.

Prior to joining PJM, Aftab was senior vice president of engineering for Eversource Energy, where he was responsible for electric transmission and distribution system planning, capital planning, engineering and design, standards, asset management, grid modernization, operations technology, control room support, and vegetation management.

Previously, he held various leadership roles with GE and ABB, providing products, projects and services to the electric utility industry. These leadership roles included engineering, operations and general management for high-voltage circuit breakers, transformers, power cables, EPC substations, power systems consulting, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), and High-Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission systems.

Aftab holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alaska – Fairbanks, a master’s degree in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society Executive Advisory Committee and a member of the Department of Energy Electricity Advisory Committee. Aftab is a NACD Certified Director and is NACD certified for cyber risk oversight. He has authored several technical publications and holds five U.S. patents.
