President
Russ Weed is President of CleanTech Strategies LLC (CTS), established in 2018 and based in Seattle, Washington. CTS is a team of four (4) subject matter experts in energy storage, power electronics & controls, microgrids, renewables, and advanced materials. The team brings to bear many decades of industry experience, with JD, PE, and EE professional training. CTS customers and partners, which are headquartered in the U.S. and Europe, include nine (9) energy storage system developers and four (4) U.S. national labs, as well as non-governmental organizations, conference companies, and national consulting firms.
Russ individually is a business and project developer, market expert, legal manager, and company advisor. He has diverse experience in start-ups, mid-market companies, conglomerates, and law firms. This includes 24 years of work in business and legal positions with private and public companies including General Electric (GE), and 10 years as an attorney, working widely in North America, Europe, and Asia.
In 2022, Russ proposed the creation of the Flow Battery Industry Group (FBIG), and collaborated with flow battery system developers and other stakeholders to establish FBIG in 2023 as a part of Battery Council International (BCI) trade association, based in Washington, DC, and in its second century now supporting multiple electrochemical battery technologies including flow, sodium, and zinc.
Russ is also active in the development of companies, products, and projects providing mechanical and thermal energy storage. He is an early and strong advocate of the utility of segmenting the grid energy storage market into short, medium, long, and seasonal capabilities and use cases; and a leader in applying that market segmentation to non-lithium ion energy storage systems now available and in development.
