Jake Gentle is a Portfolio Manager and Supervisor for Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Secure and Resilient Renewables and Grid Integration portfolio, as well as INL’s Laboratory Relationship Manager to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO). As a portfolio manager and staff supervisor, Jake leads teams through the development of technology and providing technical oversight by coordinating state-of-the-art and innovative solutions.
Since 2009, Gentle has led multiple programs focused on the secure integration of clean energy technologies. This research includes leading the cybersecurity roadmap for wind technologies, wind and solar cybersecurity threat assessments, resiliency and security of distributed energy technologies in microgrid applications, deployable wind and solar energy technologies for defense applications, and facilitating the global advancement of innovation, verification, and validation of Grid Enhancing Technologies like dynamic line rating. Gentle is an active, voting member within the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association. Gentle developed an INL initiative called Securing the Path to Net-Zero™ and has multiple patents, copyrights, and over 100 publications and conference proceedings.
Jake currently serves as the Smart Electric Power Alliance Cybersecurity Working Group Co-Chair and is a RE+ Core Education Committee member for 2025.
