Kerry Cheung
Director, Applied Grid Transformation Office of Electricity
Kerry is the Director for Applied Grid Transformation within the Office of Electricity (OE) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) where he is leading efforts to accelerate the adoption of advance grid technologies, working closely with industry and other stakeholders to facilitate transformation of the electric power system. From 2020-2024, Kerry served as the first Director of the DOE Korea Office and Energy Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, advancing U.S. energy, science and technology, and nuclear security and nonproliferation interests in South Korea, fostering deeper bilateral cooperation, and facilitating commercial investments in the United States.
Prior to his overseas tour, Kerry was a Program Manager and Strategist for OE where he established new programs and initiatives to address grid research gaps and led OE’s innovation and technology transfer activities. He also led strategic planning and evaluation activities for OE, enhanced collaborations across the Department, and represented DOE in engagements with domestic, international, and interagency stakeholders. Kerry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
